Bulginess men pull a wooden block at Tanjung Bira Beach in Bulukumba, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Phinisi, a masterpiece of traditional Bulgis-Makassar design, is a traditional wooden two-masted sailing ship, well-known as traditional sea transportation amongst the Bulginess people for many centuries. According to the ancient I La Galigo manuscript, phinisi has already existed since around the 14th century. The schooners are largely built using the design and construction techniques handed down from generation to generation over hundreds of years.
