INSIDE EDITION has learned more about the photo purporting to show John Edwards holding his alleged love child. Many are wondering how the photo could have been taken.
The National Enquirer, which broke the story of the affair, says it got a tip about Edwards meeting with Rielle Hunter the day before it took place. "A confidential source of information came forward, told us that they were having a meeting at the Beverly Hilton. At that point we knew we had the golden goose in hand," says Enquirer Executive Editor Barry Levine.
But Edwards told ABC's Nightline the meeting was planned last minute. "I had been in Los Angeles that day to do an event with the mayor and that afternoon I got a call in my hotel room."
On July 21st, the day of the meeting, Edwards attended a press conference with the mayor of Los Angeles. Edwards says he received a phone call sometime after the event from a friend of Rielle Hunter. "I got a call in my hotel room from a gentleman named Bob McGovern. I knew he was a friend of Miss Hunter's and he asked me to come and meet with them."
Edwards continued on to say that he did not tell his wife Elizabeth where he was going.
INSIDE EDITION learned that the night of Edwards's secret rendezvous his wife was in Chicago raising awareness for cancer with cycling star Lance Armstrong.
According to The Enquirer, Edwards snuck into the Beverly Hilton at 9:40 p.m. The photo was taken at some point before he left at 2:45 a.m.
"There is no question in my mind, 150%, that that is John Edwards in that photo holding the child," Barry Levine tells INSIDE EDITION.
The National Enquirer won't comment on the methods it used to obtain the photo, but insist it is authentic despite Edwards's suggestions it's a fake.
INSIDE EDITION showed the picture to photo expert Jeff Sedlik, who says it's impossible to settle the controversy by examining the blurry image. "Draperies seem to be consistent with other photographs that we've examined – very similar drapes if not identical drapes. However, the draperies could be easily inserted in the background...I can't say one way or another whether it's been retouched." Meanwhile, INSIDE EDITION has also learned more about Andrew Young, Edwards's former campaign Chief of Operations. Young is now at the center of the scandal. The longtime aide claims he's the father of Hunter's little girl. But Young is still married to his wife Cheri. In fact, they and their three children lived just a few blocks away from Hunter when she was pregnant and living in North Carolina.
Barry Levine tells INSIDE EDITION, "Andrew Young would take his wife and young children over to the house where she was in, have dinner with her...to spend some companionship time with her. That's not the type of behavior one would exhibit if you were cheating with a woman and then have her child."
Young's family came under siege as the story of Edwards's affair unfolded, prompting Young's wife to call 911.
Just months later, in a bizarre turn of events, Young, his wife and their three children moved to the west coast and into a $3 million home in Montecito, California, an exclusive suburb of Santa Barbara. Shockingly, it is being reported the Rielle Hunter and her new baby then moved in with the Young family.
The Enquirer is reporting that Edwards is the father of Hunter's daughter and Young is simply helping him minimize fallout from the affair. "[Young] is a loyalist to John Edwards and he is taking the fall for this," Levine concludes.
