MTV VMAs 2008

ORIGINAL AIRDATE: 9/8/2008

The 2008 MTV Video Music Awards were held on Sunday, September 7th.

The Pussycat Dolls told INSIDE EDITION they are rooting for a Britney Spears comeback.

VMAs host Russell Brand trashed the Jonas Brothers (l-r Kevin and Nick Jonas pictured), but later apologized.

Disney star Miley Cyrus was reportedly mortified at Brand's Jonas Brothers jokes.

Olympic swimming star Michael Phelps walked the VMAs red carpet, chatting with stars and reporters.

Britney Spears looked trim and glamorous as she kicked off the MTV Video Music Awards and took home three of the nights top prizes, including Video of the Year.

"I first want to thank God; [I'd like to thank] my two boys who inspire me every day," Britney said during one of her acceptance speeches.

Her appearance was a big improvement over last year's VMAs, where Britney looked bloated and dazedly stumbled through her dance moves.  But this year she sparkled in a knee-length silver dress.

The red carpet was buzzing with excitement and everyone was talking about Britney's big comeback.

"I love her and I want her to take over the world again," Taylor Swift told INSIDE EDITION.

The Pussycat Dolls also support Britney.  "My fingers are crossed for her, I want her to come back slammin'," said Kimberly Wyatt, one of the Dolls.

But this year's VMAs may not be remembered so much for the music as the politics.  The show's host, British comedian Russell Brand, kicked things off by bashing President Bush, and later launched into a series of off-color jokes about Sarah Palin's pregnant teenage daughter.

The comedian also trashed teen heartthrobs the Jonas Brothers, but a few minutes later he apologized.

Miley Cyrus, who used to date Nick Jonas, was reportedly mortified by the jokes.

Before the show, Miley showed INSIDE EDITION her age-appropriate little black dress and a very high pair of heels.

"I'm like the smallest one on the red carpet so I put on my biggest pair of high heels," explained Miley.

It wasn't just a night for rock stars.  Olympic Gold Medalist Michael Phelps walked the red carpet in a cool pair of dark shades, and socialite Paris Hilton looked pretty in pink...but the night really belonged to Britney and her big comeback.
