"I don't know how I survived it. I don't know how I survived it, honestly," Brooke Simmons says, talking about her romance with one of the most reviled men in America. Simmons was once engaged to one-time JonBenét Ramsey murder suspect, John Mark Karr.
"There was [sic] times when we had lots of fun, but I always think most of our good times were followed by bad times immediately after," she says.
Karr created an international sensation when he was brought back from Thailand after claiming he was with JonBenét the night she was killed.
However, authorities dropped the case, saying DNA testing showed Karr was not involved.
24-year-old Simmons, a divorcee with a daughter of her own, contacted Karr by e-mail to express sympathy, and then the two began dating.
Despite the fact that Karr was once preparing for a sex change, Simmons described their love life as "a normal heterosexual relationship." She says their dates were like everyone else's. Dates included "walks in the parks, dinner at home on the back porch; he made me laugh, he really did and he was very attentive."
However, Simmons tells INSIDE EDITION there were arguments too.
According to Simmons, Karr made her cry every day.
Simmons says Karr never hit her, but one of their arguments landed her fiancé in court after a neighbor called 911.
Simmons went on to say that that was not the only instance whereupon police were called to the home she shared with Karr. When asked if there were other things besides the JonBenét Ramsey case that scared her about her lover, Simmons says, "It is a pretty big aside..."
However, the young beauty says she was never scared for her safety. "John would crawl up in the corner and cry before he would ever physically try to kill me or harm me."
Simmons walked out on Karr in the summer of 2008 and moved to Las Vegas.
She says with a smile that she does realize that many thought of Karr as creepy, but she goes on to explain. "I just happen to have, I caught myself in a situation where I was with this guy who I fell for and cared for and was with him, but yet I just watched as a world thought of him as a monster and as a creep and a killer or a liar, and that was something I wrestled with."
Though she does not ever look back and wonder why she got involved with Karr, Simmons says she does realize the mistakes she made during their relationship.
Simmons's daughter is 4-years-old, almost as old as JonBenét was when she died, but she is adamant the little girl was never in harm's way.
When INSIDE EDITION pressed, asking Simmons if Karr had ever mentioned his role in the JonBenét case, she says he never said he made any of it up. "He never said that he made it up. Never," she says.
Simmons goes on to say that she does believe that Karr still believes he had something to do with the little girl's murder case. She, however, is more cryptic when asked if she believes her former fiancé is linked to the dead beauty queen. "You know, my only response to that could be if there's something left for law enforcement to decide that needs to be investigated; they will do that. Why they let him go so quick I don't understand based on things that I've seen and...many people have seen as well. It's not just me, but...I think they dropped the ball too quick on that with him."
INSIDE EDITION attempted to reach John Mark Karr for comment on this report, but were told by Karr's father that he had since moved out of the country.
