She's the woman whose legs won't stop growing. Since INSIDE EDITION first showed you Mandy Sellars's inspiring story, her legs have actually grown one and half inches.
Mandy was born with a rare condition where her legs continue to grow. She works out with weights to keep her upper body trim, and she looks normal from the waist up.
Doctors have never seen anything like it. Mandy's legs weigh an astonishing 210 pounds! Her feet are six times the normal size, and her left foot is twisted backwards. Mandy is five-foot-three, but her specially fitted shoes make her six-feet-tall. Even making tea is difficult for Mandy, because her legs are so heavy she can't stand for more than ten minutes at a time.
She drives using special hand controls for the accelerator and brake. Mandy has to gingerly get out of the car one leg at a time. While INSIDE EDITION was with Mandy at her home in England, an old friend brought her young son for a visit.
"I think it's amazing how independent she is, it's inspiring really," says Mandy's friend Claire Wilson.
The friends went for a stroll but Mandy struggled just to keep up. Her legs are so large that each step puts an enormous strain on her heart. Now Mandy has a wrenching decision to make. Doctors tell her there is only one solution to stop her legs from growing.
"Amputation is the only thing that will work," says Mandy.
Mandy says she's putting off amputating her legs for as long as possible, but she knows that day is coming. |
