Jennifer Hudson got a standing ovation as she takes home her first Grammy award, which was announced by Whitney Houston.
"Wow...I'm standing next to Whitney Houston!" marveled the singer.
It was also the first time Hudson spoke in public after the murders of her mother, brother and nephew in October 2008.
"I first would like to thank God, who has brought me through. I would like to thank my family in heaven and those who are here today," said an emotional Hudson.
Hudson followed her dramatic appearance with a live performance. At the end of the song she fought back tears as the audience once again rose to their feet in support.
And while there was plenty of buzz surrounding Chris Brown and girlfriend Rihanna's absences, there was another big no-show Grammy night.
Usher canceled his Grammy plans after his wife, Tameka became seriously ill, following complications from surgery in Brazil, reportedly a cosmetic procedure.
A spokesman for Usher says the singer's wife was in stable condition and "Usher is with her at the hospital."
Rapper M.I.A., who is 9-months pregnant, went into contractions after performing a high-powered number in one of the wildest maternity outfits ever.
And there was no sign of the recession on the red carpet of the Grammys. The stars sported lots of glitz and tons of glamour.
Teen stars Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift looked lovely in long black gowns!
"It's just so cool to get to go to the Grammys and get to get up on stage with one of your friends and play a song you wrote. It's unbelievable," Swift told INSIDE EDITION's Lisa Guerrero.
Jordin Sparks turned heads in a beautiful strapless number. She told INSIDE EDITION that her dress was created by a designer from Sparks's home state of Arizona, Deborah Davenport.
Carrie Underwood glistened in a shimmering gold and beaded gown, but there were also some serious red carpet misses.
Michelle Beadle of People magazine told INSIDE EDITION, "One miss would have to be John Mayer. I don't know what to call what he was wearing. It was head to toe...actually it was all the way up to his neck. A satin silky number with a long jacket. Overall, not a good look for John."
And biggest winners of the night was former Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, who took home 5 Grammys with their album Raising Sand. |
