It was a head-banging moment at the Tony Awards as rocker Brett Michaels got smacked in the head on live TV.

Michaels and his band Poison performed as part of the Tony's big opening number. But, as the superstar leaves the stage he collides with a piece of the set being lowered from the ceiling.

The singer took the blame for the run-in saying he "missed his mark." His rep says Michaels sustained "bruises to his lips and nose" and was "getting X-rays" to determine if he had any serious injuries.

Host Neil Patrick Harris poked fun at the Rock of Love star's onstage crash, joking, "His number gave head-banging a whole new meaning." Though Harris added that the rocker was doing fine after the collision.

Earlier Michaels walked the star-studded red carpet and shared a moment with Sopranos star James Gandolfini.

Elton John's musical Billy Elliot was the big winner, dancing off with 10 Tony Awards.

The three young boys who share the title role made Broadway history when they took home the Best Actor in a Musical Tony. It's the first time three people have shared the award. Backstage they jumped for joy with their statues in hand.

But it was a night filled with music and Broadway's biggest stars shared the stage for a performance with enough electricity to light up "The Great White Way."
