Toni Harris, 21, Becomes 1st Female College Football Player to Sign Letter of Intent

Toni Harris is breaking records by becoming the first woman in history to sign a letter of intent for a football scholarship.

Harris, 21, who attends East Los Angeles College, was already the first woman in the school’s history to play football and now she is heading to Central Methodist University in Missouri where she will play defense as a free safety.

Harris is no newbie to beating the odds as she overcame ovarian cancer at just 18 and is the first person in her family to ever attend college. Her coach at East LA College, Bobby Godinez, said her resiliency is notable.

"Toni Harris has shown great resolve in her journey and quest to be a college football player," Godinez said in a statement.” She has shown herself to be a great teammate here at East Los Angeles College and a great member of this community. We all wish her the best in her journey beyond ELAC.”

Her dream is to one day play in the NFL. She previously told ESPN that many coaches didn’t believe in her, but she has proved them wrong.

"A coach told me, 'Nobody's ever going to play you to be at the next level.' In the end, you’ve got to push yourself,” she told the station in January.

In an ad for Toyota that aired at the Super Bowl, Harris said she hopes other young girls follow their dreams.

“The message I would like to send to younger girls is to keep your dream alive. Nothing is impossible. You can ask God for something but you have to meet that halfway,” she said.
