White Rhino Calf With 'Very Hairy Ears' Born at Zoo on Christmas Eve
The hungry baby rhino is eating more than would be expected, keepers said.
A very special delivery was made at the Toronto Zoo this Christmas: A baby white rhino with "very hairy ears."
Mom Zohari gave birth for the first time to the male calf on Christmas Eve.
It's been nearly 30 years since a white rhino was born at the zoo.
“Both mom and baby are doing very well, with reports that mom is a very tired but a very calm and protective first-time mother,” the zoo said in a statement.
Keepers said the unnamed calf is quite heavy, weighing nearly 140 pounds.
"He has been eating more than would be expected, and he apparently has very hairy ears," the zoo said.
The birth marks an important milestone in white rhino conservation. The species is considered near threatened, with only about 20,000 white rhinos left in the wild.
