Despite Memorable Performances, These Great Actors Have Never Won An Oscar

Could Sunday finally be Leonardo DiCaprio’s moment where he will take home the coveted Academy Award for the first time? The actor, who has been nominated five times since 1993, including for his latest role in The Revenant, has surprisingly never won.

DiCaprio is not alone. There are a shocking amount of other high-profile faces and talents that never took home an Oscar.

Sigourney Weaver (Getty) 

Sigourney Weaver broke barriers playing Ripley in the Alien films, becoming one of the biggest names of the 1980s and going on to earn a nomination for her work. But her portrayal of the warrant officer wasn't enough to secure a gold statue. 

She came up short again, losing out on the Best Actress win after being nominated for her work in Gorillas In The Mist and for Best Supporting Actress for Working Girl.

Harrison Ford has given the world some of Hollywood’s most memorable characters, bringing to life the roles of Indiana Jones, Han Solo and Jack Ryan. But despite his on-screen personas, he has never taken home an Academy Award and was only been nominated once in 1985 for Witness.

Robert Downey Jr. (Instagram)

Robert Downey Jr. is a box office megastar. Aside from making great popcorn flicks, the thespian cut his teeth in a variety of roles including 1992’s Chaplin, for which he received a Best Actor nomination. He was nominated again in 2009 for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Tropic Thunder. However, he still doesn’t have an Oscar to his name.

Samuel L. Jackson (Instagram)

He may be sick and tired of mother****** snakes on that mother****** plane, but Samuel L. Jackson might even be more tired with coming a stone's throw away from securing an Academy Award.

Jackson has only been nominated once for his role as the gangster Jules in Pulp Fiction, and saw no recognition for his work in award-nominated films Django Unchained and Do the Right Thing.

Will Smith is a household name and box office darling, but still has not been able to walk away with Oscar gold, despite being nominated twice, first in 2001 for Ali and then in 2007 for his work in Pursuit of Happyness.

 Ralph Fiennes (Getty)

Ralph Fiennes is a name one would expect to follow “Academy Award Winner," but the British actor still has never won an Oscar. He was nominated twice for his roles in Best Picture winners Schindler’s List and The English Patient.

Glenn Close has racked up six nominations during her illustrious career but the actress, who has starred in nearly 50 films in over 30 years, still has never been able to call Oscar her man.

Johnny Depp (Pool Footage)

Johnny Depp has been nominated three times for his work in 2003's Pirates of  the Caribbean, 2004's Finding Neverland and 2007's Sweeney Todd. Many were surprised that neither the actor's critically acclaimed performance in last year's Black Mass– nor the film itself– received any nominations this Oscar season, but Depp may not have been as bothered.

"I don't want to win one of those things ever, you know?" he told BBC at the London Film Festival in November, People reported. "I don't want to have to talk... They gave me one of those things, like a nomination, two or three times. A nomination is plenty."

Helena Bonham Carter (Getty) 

Helena Bonham Carter has wowed audiences with many of her roles, including in films made by her partner, director Tim Burton. Even though she has been nominated twice, including 2011’s The King’s Speech, which won Best Picture, she herself has never won an Academy Award.

Keira Knightley (Getty)

Keira Knightley busted onto the scene in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise but the British actress has proven her worth in roles like The Duchess  and Anna Karenina. She was nominated for her work in 2006's Pride & Prejudice and in 2015's The Imitation Game, but lost out both times. 

Edward Norton (Getty) 

Edward Norton has been nominated twice for his roles in 1996’s Primal Fear and 1998’s American History X. Despite starring in last year’s Best Picture winner, Birdman, Norton was not nominated for his work in the film and still doesn’t have an Academy Award to call his own.

Naomi Watts (Instagram)

Blonde bombshell Naomi Watts has churned out memorable performances her entire career and has been recognized the world over for it. However, she has failed to secure an Oscar, despite being nominated twice.

Tom Cruise (Pool)

Tom Cruise has been a Hollywood heartthrob his entire career and even though he known for his actions films, the actor has been nominated– and lost–  three times for career-defining roles in Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire and Magnolia

Some actors like Robert Redford, Brad Pitt, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon may not have won for their on screen achievements but have taken home the big prize in other areas like producing, directing and writing.
