A suspect was taken into custody after an active shooter situation was reported at Noblesville West Middle School, the Noblesville Fire Department tweeted at 9:39 a.m.
An Indiana middle school student has been taken into custody after allegedly opening fire on schoolmates Friday, officials said.
The unnamed boy was detained after police rushed to Noblesville West Middle School on reports of shots fired at 9:06 a.m., Noblesville Police Chief Kevin Jowitt told reporters at a press conference.
The suspected shooter asked to be excused from class and returned to the room with two handguns, Jowitt said.
A student and a teacher were rushed to local hospitals for treatment of gunshot wounds.
Their conditions were not provided by police.
A science teacher in the room was responsible for disarming the student, according to reports.
The unnamed educator tackled the shooter to the ground and swatted the gun away from him, a student who said she was in the classroom told WXIN-TV. Police have not yet confirmed that account.
A secondary threat was made against Noblesville High School, but officials believed it to be only a "communicated threat" and not something being acted on, Jowitt said.
Authorities were working to secure the high school Friday.
Police from several local communities, as well as the FBI and ATF, responded to the school, located about 30 miles north of Indianapolis.
Parents were advised that if they did not receive a phone call from school officials, their children were fine.
Students could be picked up at any time by parents, but a regular-timed dismissal was planned to go on as scheduled.
Vice President Mike Pence, who is from Indiana, said on Twitter he and his wife, Karen, are "praying for the victims of the terrible shooting."
"To everyone in the Noblesville community — you are on our hearts and in our prayers," Pence wrote. "Thanks for the swift response by Hoosier law enforcement and first responders."
