Arrest Made in Cold Case of Woman Who Texted Ultrasound to Ex-Boyfriend Before Vanishing
An arrest has been made in the cold case involving the disappearance of a pregnant Colorado woman who texted a photo of an ultrasound to her ex-boyfriend before disappearing in 2013.
Detectives from the Pueblo Police Department, along with agents from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, arrested Donthe Lucas on Friday in connection with the death of Kelsie Jean Schelling.
Lucas was already in custody at the Pueblo County Detention Center facing unrelated charges when detectives served him with the arrest warrant, according to authorities.
Lucas faces the charge of murder in the first degree and is currently being held without bond.
"The PPD and the CBI have worked tirelessly investigating Schelling's disappearance and murder, interviewing countless individuals and following up on hundreds of leads since February 2013," police said in a statement.
Investigators say the case is ongoing and thus declined to release specific details but said recent new leads led to the arrest.
Schelling made the two-hour trip from Denver to meet Lucas at his request after texting him the photo, according to local reports.
Schelling was last seen at a Walmart store on Feb. 4, 2013, where police say she texted Lucas, "Tired of waiting."
Lucas reportedly then told her to meet near his grandmother's house before her final text, which read, "Where are you... I've been here for over an hour just waiting."
Lucas is being held without bond.
