Twinkies Are Back on the Shelves

Twinkie fans are elated over the return of the iconic snack treat. But is the new Twinkie as good as the original? INSIDE EDITION has the scoop.

As Twinkies make their way back onto store shelves, everyone's clamoring to get their hands on one.

After an eight month hiatus, the sugary treat is making a triumphant return. But is the new Twinkie the same? Not quite.

The snack's shelf life has been extended to 45 days, almost three weeks longer than the 26 days the former Twinkie was supposed to stay fresh. The new Twinkie is also smaller.

And, get this, the company is hoping Twinkie will become the new breakfast food of choice.

But, how does the new Twinkie taste?

INSIDE EDITION did a Twinkie taste test with Gail Simmons, head food critic on Top Chef Masters premiering July 24 on Bravo.

"It tastes exactly as a Twinkie should," Simmons said. "It's spongy and that cream filling is perfect. Yeah, that's delicious."

INSIDE EDITION hit the streets of New York City where Twinkie The Kid is handing out the beloved snack food.

One young girl said, "It tastes really good."

"I think it tastes the same. The creamy center is just as creamy as it was," one woman said.

"It's a little sweeter, yeah. Like the actual bread is a little sweeter," said another.

And over at the Today show there was a Twinkie feeding frenzy. The anchors tossed Twinkies to the crowd, while Savannah Guthrie kept a few for herself.

With 50 million Twinkies back on the market, there are plenty for everyone.
