El DeBarge Busted For Drug Possession

Just weeks after El DeBarge told INSIDE EDITION Whitney Houston wanted to stay clean, he has been arrested on drug charges.

80's singing sensation El DeBarge told INSIDE EDITION just five weeks ago about his last encounter with Whitney Houston.

"She said, 'I want to stay clean,' " said DeBarge.

Now DeBarge finds himself in an embarrassing situation. He was arrested yesterday for suspicion of possession of narcotics with intent to sell.

The singer whose 2010 album Second Chance was nominated for a Grammy, saw his comeback threatened when undercover narcotics officers arrested him on a busy Los Angeles street in broad daylight on suspicion of drug possession with intent to sell.

El DeBarge is best known for his hit "Rythm Of The Night." He and Whitney Houston were close friends as their careers skyrocketed.

El DeBarge ran into Houston in a nightclub that turned out to be her last public appearance. They hadn't seen each other in years. He says they talked about their mutual struggles with drugs, and they hugged for a long time.

DeBarges told INSIDE EDITION, "She said,'It's going to be alright. Just hang in there. We can do this. Just keep trying.' "

Houston would be dead within 48 hours.

"The second chance...it was there for both of us," said DeBarge.

The charges were dismissed today for lack of evidence.
