AFI Honors Mike Nichols

The American Film Institute honored Hollywood director Mike Nichols with their 38th Life Achievement Award on June 10. INSIDE EDITION reports.  

Julia Roberts and Oprah Winfrey were among Hollywood's biggest stars who gathered for a tribute to director Mike Nichols.

Diane Sawyer gushed over her husband, who received the American Film Institute's Life Achievement Award.

Nichols interrupted his red carpet interview with INSIDE EDITION to greet one of his favorite actresses, Cher.

"Can I say hello to Cher? I sort of have to," he said, and walked over to give her a hug.

Michael Douglas emceed the event and Emma Thompson and Meryl Streep spoke on stage. Roberts also spoke, and she poked fun at Nichols for changing his name after he immigrated to the United States from Germany.
    
"Michael Igor Pechowsky...I can't believe you didn't stick with that!" she joked.

Also in attendance to honor Nichols were Steven Spielberg, Helen Mirren, Morgan Freeman, Jack Nicholson, and Natalie Portman, among others.
