A mother whose son was killed as he drove to his brother’s rehearsal dinner has spoken out about her loss - and her anger.
Eric Stein was driving his new wife Ksenia when they were hit by a fire truck as he turned into the venue in California last Friday. He was due to be his brother’s best man the following day.
His mother Karen told INSIDE EDITION she is “very, very angry.”
“This didn’t have to happen,” she said.
She was supposed to be witnessing her son Scott’s celebrations, but instead she saw her other son’s fatal accident.
“Instead of planning what I'm wearing to this wedding, I'm planning what I'm going to be wearing to the funeral," she said.
Eric’s family heard the collision and rushed to help. The truck, which was responding to an emergency, had slammed into the couple’s car and pushed it nearly 150 feet into the bushes.
His devastated brother Sean, an EMT, was one of the first people to reach him. But there was nothing they could do to save him. Eric’s wife Ksenia escaped the crash with injuries.
The family says that the accident could have been avoided.
“My son turned left and that truck passed him and took him out,” Karen said. “He was well into his turn.”
Now she is trying to come to sense with the loss.
“My son is gone," she added. "My son is gone from this world and he did nothing wrong.”
The LA County Fire Department told INSIDE EDITION that it's "deeply saddened by the tragic death of Eric Stein. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.”
The department said it cannot comment on the accident due to ongoing investigations.
