Hoda Kotb Cries on Air as She Remembers Kathie Lee Gifford's Husband, Frank

'Today' show host Hoda Kotb got emotional talking about the passing of Frank Gifford.

Hoda Kotb broke down in tears on Monday's Today show as she talked about Frank Gifford, the husband of her co-host Kathie Lee Gifford.

Gifford, 84, a former running back for the New York Giants and a sportscaster, died on Sunday of natural causes in the Connecticut home he shared with Kathie Lee, 61.

Kotb said she has been trying to comfort her close friend.

“She is remarkably strong, I'm in awe of her even today,” she said on Monday.

An emotional Kotb then paid tribute to the NFL Hall of Famer, saying: “Frank will be beloved by family and friends.”

She also mentioned: "He came on our show a bunch of times and he was always fun. When he showed up here, we knew we were going to laugh.”

Kotb also tweeted:

He is survived by his wife, Kathie Lee and their two children, Cody, 25, and Cassidy, 22, as well as his three children from a previous marriage.

The family released a statement following his death:

"It is with the deepest sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved husband, father and friend, Frank Gifford. Frank died suddenly this beautiful Sunday morning of natural causes at his Connecticut home.

"We rejoice in the extraordinary life he was privileged to live, and we feel grateful and blessed to have been loved by such an amazing human being. We ask that our privacy be respected at this difficult time and we thank you for your prayers.”

Kathie Lee also took to Twitter to thank fans and friends for their support following his death.

Deeply grateful to all 4 ur outpouring of grace. We r steadfast in our faith & finding comfort in knowing where Frank is. Phillippians 4:13.
