Mom Accused of Smothering Her 3 Sons to Death Could Face the Death Penalty

Police say Brittany Pilkington, from Ohio, told them that she murdered the boys because her husband showed them more attention than their daughter.

A mother accused of killing her three young sons over 13 months could face the death penalty.

Police say Brittany Pilkington, from Bellefontaine, Ohio, told them earlier this month that she murdered the boys because her husband showed them more attention than their daughter.

On Tuesday, the 23-year-old was indicted on aggravated murder charges, which, if she’s convicted, carry the possibility of a death sentence. On Wednesday, a lawyer entered not guilty pleas on her behalf, The Associated Press reported.

Chief Assistant Prosecutor Eric Stewart says she is on suicide watch in jail, where she is being held on $1 million bond.

On August 18, she calmly called 911 to report that her three-month-old son Noah wasn't breathing, according to reports.

Authorities say she later admitted to killing him as well as her four-year-old son Gavin, who passed away in April, and three-month-old Niall, who died in July 2014. From left to right, Gavin, Niall and Noah, are pictured in handouts.

Logan County prosecutor William Goslee, who interviewed Pilkington, told The Columbus Dispatch at the time of Noah's death: "In her mind, she was protecting her daughter from being not as loved as the boys were by their father."

Her daughter was taken into custody by a county child welfare agency.

Pilkington was charged with three counts of murder and is in jail on a $1 million bond.

Noah's death came as authorities were already investigating what had happened to the other boys.

Their causes of death still hadn't been determined at the time but after a coroner determined the deaths weren't suspicious, Noah and his sister were handed back to their parents.

Investigators said there is no evidence that Pilkington's husband had anything to do with the deaths, WBNS reported.

Noah was remembered at a funeral on Wednesday.
