The fireworks lit up the night sky over Marina Del Rey, California, a quiet seaside community that's home to thousands of residents. Some people thought it was gunfire, or even worse, a terrorist attack.

Police were flooded with dozens of emergency 911 calls.

Psychologist Wendy Walsh told INSIDE EDITION: “I woke up at midnight to what I thought was gunfire. I’m not joking. It was so loud and so booming.”

She was among those startled by the eight-minute long fireworks show.

“My kids woke up, they were really frightened. They got in bed with me. They were like, ‘What's going on, Mommy?” she said.

The fireworks were part of a wild yacht party thrown by Khloe Kardashian for her boyfriend, NBA star James Harden of the Houston Rockets.

City councilman Mike Bonin told INSIDE EDITION of the incident: “Families were woken up in the middle of the night, kids [were] screaming, people lost a night’s sleep.
