Jamycheal Mitchell, 24, was arrested in April for allegedly stealing a Zebra Cake, Snickers bar and Mountain Dew from a 7-Eleven, according to The Guardian. He was found dead on August 19.

Prison officials at Hampton Roads Regional Jail in Portsmouth said his death appeared to be from "natural causes." An autopsy was still pending.

His aunt, Roxanne Adams, said her nephew, who reportedly had bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, was "extremely emaciated." His family said he had refused to eat and take his medication in the jail.

He had been charged on misdemeanor charges of petty larceny and trespassing, and was being held in a jail cell on his own without bail. Officials could not explain why he was not given bail.

A month after his arrest, a judge ruled that he was not competent to stand trial and ordered him to be sent to a state-run mental health facility - but the hospital said it had no vacancy, according to The Guardian. He remained in jail until he passed away.

Senior prison officials said his death is not being treated as suspicious.

Friends and family paid tribute to him on Facebook, saying he "he touched soooo many ppl & he didn't even know it."

The family has also set up a Gofundme page for his funeral expenses.
