During the rambling 12-minute speech he also admitted to smoking "something" before taking the stage.

“Did he smoke something before he came out here? Yes, I rolled up a little something, I knocked the edge off,” he said.

The announcement that he will make a bid for the White House inspired various memes:

Taylor Swift presented him with the award and had some fun with her introduction.

“Imma let you finish, but Kanye West had one of the greatest albums of all time,” she said.

She was referring to that moment at the 2009 VMAs when he stormed the stage during her acceptance speech.

Also during the awards show, Taylor Swift and Nicki Minaj proved once and for all that there is absolutely no bad blood between them.

Taylor joined Nicki on stage for a duet just weeks after they got into a heated Twitter feud when Nicki tweeted about being snubbed for a Video of the Year nomination.

But as Nicki ends one feud, another may be starting.

She ended her acceptance speech for Best Hip Hop video by confronting Miley about her recent interview in the New York Times.

Miley was asked about Nicki and Taylor’s feud and told the Times: "What I read sounded very Nicki Minaj, which, if you know Nicki Minaj is not too kind. It's not very polite.”

On Sunday night, Minaj said: “And now, back to this b*** that had a lot to say about me the other day in the press. Miley, what's good?"

Miley was this year's host.

“I have literally done everything on the VMA stage and none of it has qualified me to host,” she joked.

The 22-year-old didn't disappoint with 10 costume changes. Some of the outfits proved wild and wacky and she even flashed her bare breast during the live show.

There was also an emotional comeback for Justin Bieber.

The embattled pop star broke down in tears at the end of his big performance where he flew through the air.

The singer also debuted a new hairdo.

He even poked a little fun at himself posting a photo - comparing his hairstyle Kate Gosselin.

His ex-girlfriend Selina Gomez reportedly left the show early to avoid a run-in with Bieber.

There was also a moment that is enraging "Black Lives Matter" activists.

Actress Rebel Wilson made light about police brutality with a joke about strippers. She said: “A lot of people have problems with the police, but I really hate police strippers.”

One activist tweeted: “@rebelwilson/@mtv, police violence isn't a joke. If the police kill someone you love, would it be a funny joke, then?”

It was one wild and crazy evening at this year's awards.
