Suzette Charles told INSIDE EDITION: “I don’t know what that was all about. I have a feeling that was about ratings."
As Williams returned to the show as a judge this weekend, CEO Sam Haskell issued an apology for how she was treated when it emerged she had posed for nude photographs.
He said: “On behalf of today's organization I want to apologize to you and your mother Miss Helen Williams. I want to apologize for anything said and done that made you feel any less than the Miss America you are and the Miss America you always will be."
During the pageant, Williams graciously accepted the apology.
But speaking to INSIDE EDITION, Suzette Charles added that, after everything Williams has achieved in her life, "I'm not sure why she needed that apology."
She added that there were rumors at the time that there were slurs thrown at Williams and her family, so the apology may have been about things that happened behind the scenes all those years ago.
Following the apology on Sunday, Miss Georgia Betty Cantrell was crowned as the new Miss America.
