Emily Blunt: I'm Sorry for Saying Becoming an American Citizen Was a 'Terrible Mistake'

Actress Emily Blunt said during an interview that she had second thoughts while watching the Republican debate.

Emily Blunt is apologizing after comments she made about not wanting to be an American citizen.

Her comments came during an interview with the Hollywood Reporter while promoting her new film, Sicario.

“I became an American citizen recently, and that night, we watched the Republican debate, and I thought, 'This was a terrible mistake. What have I done?'” she said in the interview. 

Fox and Friends commentator said of Blunt’s comments, “Congratulations! You are an American citizen and you are very unhappy" and "She has alienated half the country."

But appearing on the Today show on Thursday, she said, “It was so not the intention to hurt anybody, or cause any offense, so I really apologize."

Blunt said it was just an offhand joke and that becoming an American citizen was important for her.

“It's really meaningful. My favorite two people in the world are American, my husband and my daughter. It was kind of a special day. Yeah it was great,” she said.

Jimmy Kimmel had some fun putting Blunt's new citizenship skills to the test when she appeared on the show recently.
