Devoted Dog Guards Her Friend for a Week After She Fell into Cistern and Couldn't Get Out
For a week, this devoted dog refused to leave her friend's side after she plunged into an old cistern and couldn't get out.
Both of the pets, Tillie, an Irish setter, and Phoebe, a Basset Hound, were reported missing from their Washington state home last week.
But on Monday, Vashon Island Pet Protectors revealed that the animals had been found.
"Tillie and Phoebe are now safe after being found deep in a ravine off monument road - with Phoebe being stuck in an old cistern," VIPP said in a Facebook post.
The duo was found after a neighbor contacted the group to say that a reddish dog had been approaching them on their property before turning around and going back to the ravine.
Volunteers headed to the ravine and "finally heard that sweet sound we have been waiting for all week," the Facebook post said. "A small one-woof response when we called out 'Tillie.'"
They found the dogs together - with Phoebe inside the cistern and Tillie dutifully waiting outside. Phoebe was sitting on some concrete rubble, keeping her out of the water below.
"For nearly a week Tillie stayed by her side with the exception of the few minutes of each day when she went for help," VIPP said.
"A round of applause to the awesome and amazing Miss Tillie. A true friend and a humbling example of the power of love."
The dogs were cold and hungry but otherwise healthy, according to reports.
