The parents of the woman who falsely claimed she was splashed with acid are making a public apology.
"Bethany is extremely sorry for the pain, but now she can begin to heal because the truth has been revealed," said Bethany Storro's mother, Nancy Neuwelt.
Nancy and Joe Neuwelt spoke outside their home in Vancouver, Washington. Their daughter, Bethany, who has confessed she inflicted horrific acid burns on her self, remained in seclusion. Her parents say they are as baffled by the hoax as the rest of America.
Nancy said, "We really don't know why, at this point. She is obviously dealing with some deep internal emotional and psychological problems that we had no knowledge of."
And one woman says she was forced to go into hiding for several days because she looked like the sketch police issued of the non-existent acid attacker.
LeAnn Johnson said, "I was concerned that I would be either asked or accosted in some way."
Meanwhile, Bethany Storro faces months of treatment, and not just for her physical scars.
"She's got a long road ahead of her but she's on the road and we are going to walk it with her," said Nancy Neuwelt.
