Freddie Gray's Mother Reportedly Tries to Take Her Own Life

The mother of Freddie Gray is said to have attempted to take her own life.

The mother of Freddie Gray, the 25-year-old Baltimore resident who died in police custody this past April, has attempted suicide, according to a published report.

Gloria Darden is said to have tried to take her own life on Wednesday night, according to CBS news station WJZ. She sustained superficial wounds and was taken to a nearby hospital where neither surgery nor stitches were required, the station reported.

Billy Murphy, the lawyer for the family, released a statement obtained by WJZ on Thursday: “…she is still mourning the loss of her son. The family asks that you continue to pray for her and for them.”

According to WJZ, Darden is currently undergoing psychiatric evaluation.

Freddie Gray was arrested on April 12 and was critically injured while in police custody. He died a week later and his passing sparked civil unrest throughout Baltimore and the country.

The young man’s family was awarded $6.4 million by the city to settle civil claims.

The six officers who are charged in Gray’s death will be tried separately over the next five months. The first trial is set for the end of November. The charges against the officers included second degree murder, involuntary manslaughter and assault. The officers have pleaded not guilty.

In May, Baltimore City State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby said that “no crime had been committed by Mr. Gray,” who was arrested for possessing a switchblade knife. Mosby mentioned that the knife that Gray had was not a switchblade and was lawful. She said that the officers “illegally arrested” Gray.

A representative for Billy Murphy told INSIDE EDITION he has "no comment" following the reports about Darden.
