There was a heartbreaking turn of events in game one of the World Series as Royals pitcher Edinson Volquez took to the mound just hours after his father died of a heart failure in Dominican Republic.
His 63-year-old dad, Daniel Volquez, died of complications from heart disease in the Dominican Republic on Tuesday.
It remains unclear if the player knew the news prior to pitching. At his wife’s request, Royals officials didn’t tell him, according to reports. However, a family source is said to have told Volquez on his way to the game, according to the Associated Press.
FOX decided not to mention it during its broadcast. They didn't want to take a chance that he would hear about his father's death in the clubhouse.
"Your heart goes out to Volquez and his whole, entire family," Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer told the Associated Press. "The way he went out there and battled for us, you hate to hear news like that. But it's another angel above watching us, behind us the whole way."
