A massive sinkhole opened up beneath a Mississippi IHOP this weekend and swallowed over a dozen cars.
The gaping maw appeared Saturday evening and measured some 50-feet wide by most accounts.
Miraculously, no one was injured.
However, WTOK reports that at least 15 cars were swallowed whole.
Customers who were dining at the pancake chain reported hearing several loud booms around 7:15 p.m. before the electricity in the place shut off.
Emercency personnel soon arrived and discovered the chaotic jumble of cars where the parking lot had once been.
"We received a call earlier this evening of a sinkhole opening up at the new IHOP restaurant," Meridian Fire Department Chief Battalion Wayne Cook said Saturday. "Upon arrival, we found multiple vehicles in the ditch. At this time, we are trying to stabilize this and keep everyone away."
It remained unclear Sunday afternoon what caused the sinkhole, but the area had received several inches of rain the days before the incident.
According to WLBT, the IHOP has been open only a week.
