Nutella Won't Customize Jar for 5-Year-Old Girl Because Her Name is Isis

Nutella's Make Me Yours campaign allowed people to customize a jar with their name, but not for 5-year-old Australian girl Isis Taylor.

A 5-year-old Australian girl won't be recieving a jar of Nutella spread customized with her name -- because it is Isis.

Isis Taylor's aunt wanted her niece and nephew to participate in the company's "Make Me Yours" campaign, which allowed Nutella lovers to buy a jar customized with their name.

However, upon learning one of the names also happens to be the popular term for an extremist group spreading across the Middle East, an employee at a department store in the town of Shellharbour declined to okay the jar.

Outraged that her daughter would be left out of the promotion because of the coincidence, her mother Heather Taylor reached out to Nutella's parent company, Ferrero.

An Australian executive with Ferrero, Craig Barker, personally contacted her the next day to stand by the company's position, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.

Taylor told Barker his company was only making things worse for her daughter.

"You are actually making my daughter's name dirty. You are choosing to refuse my daughter's name in case the public refers to it negatively," she reportedly told him.

Unfortunately for Isis, the company stood by the decision.

"Like all campaigns, there needs to be consistency in the way terms and conditions are applied," the company said in a statement. "Unfortunately, this has meant there have been occasions where a label has not been approved on the basis that it could have been misinterpreted by the broader community or viewed as inappropriate."

Isis is named after the Egyptian goddess of, among other things, wisdom.

Her brother, Odhinn, who is named after a god of the Norse pantheon of deities, was initially also denied his Nutella jar but it was eventually allowed.

A message left for a rep with the U.S. Ferrero office in New Jersey was not immediately returned.
