It was raining teddy bears as fans threw 28,815 stuffed toys onto the ice during the Calgary Hitmen hockey team’s most recent game.
The bears were for a good cause. Since 1995, the team has hosted a “Teddy Bear Toss” at Saddledome Arena and each year, they ask fans to bring stuffed animals to donate to 50 local Canadian charities.
This past weekend’s toss set a record as the most ever when more than 28,000 toys were launched onto the ice simultaneously.
The most remarkable part of the event is that only 19,289 spectators were in attendance.
Over the past 20 years, the team has donated more than 300,000 stuffed animals to charities.
