Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter didn't mince his words when he was asked about Donald Trump.
"He's an a**hole," he told reporters on Tuesday, before turning to religious leaders surrounding him and adding: "I apologize reverends, people of the religious community, I apologize."
His comments came after Trump was widely condemned for his call to ban Muslims from entering American following recent terrorist attacks.
Mayor Nutter spoke after surveillance camera captured a pig's head being tossed at the Al-Aqsa Islamic Society.
Officials from the center, which is in the same building as an Islamic school and business development center, said the pig itself worries them less than the prospect of violent attacks against the center.
"It’s just a pig’s head — that’s not a big deal; but it does send a message," mosque spokesman Marwan Kreidie told the Washington Post. "I think people are worried that if they do a pig’s head, they could do something more violent in the future."
Other attacks towards Muslims are also raising safety concerns.
In St. Louis, Missouri, a voicemail left at a mosque said: "Come my way and I'll (expletive) you all. Cut your (expletive) head off."
In Fort Worth, Texas, the Council on American-Islamic Relations also started receiving hate-filled calls. One caller told them: "You're all idiots. You're not welcome here… I hope you get sprayed with pig's blood."
In Queens, New York, a Muslim store owner was left with a black eye after an attacker repeatedly hit him, according to PIX 11.
Sarker Haque, 53, says he was attacked in Fatima Food Mart in Astoria on Sunday.
He said he asked the attacker, "What's wrong with you?" and the man responded: "I kill Muslims."
Despite criticism, Trump has defended his comments about Muslims, saying on Wednesday: "We need safety. It's not about religion, this is about safety."
