After Giving Birth, New Mother Learns Her Fiance and Mom Died in Crash on Way to Hospital

Speed appeared to be a "significant factor" in the collision that killed a Michigan man and his fiance's mother as the pair rushed to the hospital.

A new mother who had just given birth was devastated to learn that two of her loved ones had died in a car crash while on their way to the Michigan hospital for her delivery.

Three hours after Crystal Matrau-Belt gave birth to her son Jeremiah by Cesarean section, she learned that her mother and her son’s father were killed when they crashed into a tree about 4 p.m. Saturday, according to reports.

Speed appeared to be a “significant factor” in the collision that killed Emil Skokan, 34, as he drove himself and his fiancé’s mother, Peggy Nichols, 53, to Bronson Methodist Hospital, the Associated Press reported.

Skokan apparently lost control of the car on a stretch of South 26th Street near Cork Street in Comstock Township, the Kalamazoo Gazette wrote.

Earlier, before driving to the hospital, he texted his fiancé to ask if she needed anything.

He wrote, "'Do you want me to bring up anything?' and just said I'll meet you up there and that he loved me," Matrau-Belt told the paper.

Matrau-Belt was admitted to the hospital Friday and decided to undergo a C-section after she experienced high blood pressure and difficulties during the delivery, giving birth to their son a day before Skokan’s 35th birthday.

After months of disagreeing over a name, the couple finally came to a decision to name him "Jeremiah" when Matrau-Belt was admitted to the hospital.

"We actually for the first time decided on a name together," she tearfully told the Gazette.

"I want to celebrate him being born, but losing my fiancé who I loved so much, and my mom at the same time, it's a really big struggle to try to balance all of that," she continued.

The baby has already begun to take on his late father’s features, Matrau-Belt said, saying she thinks he’ll have his dad’s curly hair.

"It's hard, but just to know that I have a piece of Emil — that helps a little bit," Matrau-Belt said.
