'Hamilton' Star Honors His Former Teacher With Rendition of Her MLK Song

Lin-Manuel Miranda gathered a group of former students to sing their teacher's uplifting son, "Martin Luther King."

To mark Martin Luther King Day, "Hamilton" creator and star Lin-Manuel Miranda gathered a group of former students from his elementary school to honor a beloved teacher.

Fifty alumni of New York's Hunter College Elementary School sang about the civil rights leader in an uplifting song entitled "Martin Luther King."

Every January, students at the school perform the song during assembly, unaware that it was penned by one of their own - former music teacher, Barbara Ames.

"It wasn’t until we got out in the real world that we realized no one else knew this amazing song," Miranda says in a video of the performance.

So they decided to share it with the world. In the video, the former students - who attended the school between 1998 and 2001 - break out into song in the school's auditorium.

"Martin Luther King, was a man with a dream," they sing. "And he took his dream to the mountain top - oh yeah!"

Ames, who no longer teaches at the school, wrote both the lyrics and the music, Miranda explains.

"If you went to Hunter, you grew up singing this song. It’s unfair that the rest of the world doesn't know it," he says.

Miranda, 36, plays Alexander Hamilton in the hit Broadway show "Hamilton." His MLK video was shared during the musical's daily "Ham 4 Ham" event - a show that's performed while people enter a same-day lottery in the hopes of snagging a ticket.
