Cops: Robber Forces 74-Year-Old Woman to Drive to Her Bank, She Refuses to Withdraw Money

A 74-year-old woman managed to thwart an armed robber who told her to withdraw money from her bank and give it to him.

Oh heck, no. 

A man forced his way into the Jeep of a 74-year-old woman in North Carolina and ordered her to drive to a bank, authorities said.

The woman, who had been getting gas, did what he said and pulled up at the Gateway Bank in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, according to police.

Brett Ryan Cote, 28, told the woman he had a gun and that she was to get out of the Jeep Cherokee and go inside and get him some money, officers said.

That's when she said no, and tried to grab her keys from the ignition, but Cote ripped them from her hand, WAVY-TV reported.

The woman jumped out of the vehicle, and Cote sped off, cops said. He was stopped not far away on a local highway.

He has been charged with armed robbery and assault and is being held in lieu of $315,000 bail, authorities said.
