Woman, 25, Survives 200-Foot Leap From George Washington Bridge: Cops

A young woman miraculously survived a plunge from the bridge between Manhattan and New Jersey on Monday evening.

A young woman plunged 200-feet off a New York City bridge on Monday evening and miraculously survived.

Police say a 25-year-old New Jersey woman, whose name is not being released plummeted from the George Washington Bridge around 5 p.m., according to Port Authority police.

"A civilian witness was interviewed and said she had seen the woman jump," Port Authority spokesman Joe Pantangelo said in a statement.

The woman was spotted swimming in the frigid Hudson River before a nearby boat managed to pluck her out, reports the New York Daily News.

The woman was alert as she was taken to a New York hospital, where she was reportedly treated for a severe leg injury that left questions as to whether the limb could be saved.

Cops reportedly recovered her car in Manhattan, according to Pentangelo.

While it is rare to survive the 25-story fall, it has happened in the past. A 29-year-old man survived it in 2009 and was able to swim to the New Jersey side.

Most aren't so lucky and, according to WNYC, jumps from the bridge have been on the rise since 2011. In fact, such incidents doubled in 2014 over the year before.
