An email released by Eliot Spitzer's lawyer says that the young woman at the center of his most recent scandal may have made up the story.
Svetlana Travis, who initially told cops that former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer tried to choke her at The Plaza Hotel, has reportedly sent him an email apologizing for making up the allegation.
The email was released by Spitzer's lawyer, Adam S. Kaufman and said: “I just read the news, I’m so sorry. My report was all fake. You tried to save me.”
Kaufman proved the Manhattan District Attorney with a copy of the email and told The New York Times: “There is no case here. There was no assault.”
The 56-year-old former governor also released a statement saying that the 25-year-old Russian was not his girlfriend.
"The woman who initially made the allegation was not my girlfriend. Lis Smith was my girlfriend, and I had and have deep affection for Lis," Spitzer said.
He has most recently been linked to public relations executive Lis Smith, who once served as Mayor Bill de Blasio’s spokeswoman. They broke it off last Christmas after dating for two years.
Lisa Linden, a spokesperson for Spitzer, issued a statement on Monday about the events saying: "There is no truth to the allegation."
Travis flew to Moscow on Sunday evening. She originally alleged the assault occurred Saturday.
Cops rushed to the 15th floor of The Plaza after they received an urgent 911 call from Travis who said she had cut her wrists. They found the former governor, who reportedly told them "everything's fine. There's no problem."
Cops left, but several minutes later they returned and entered the suite after noticing blood and broken glass.
She was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital where a man identifying himself as "George," who cops believe is Spitzer, tried to visit her.

She was released from the hospital in time to make her flight to Moscow. Her relationship with Spitzer is unknown. He has not been charged with any crime.
Spitzer resigned in disgrace in 2008 after the bombshell revelation that he was "Client 9," his code name for a high-priced call girl ring. Ashley Dupre, 22, became famous as the former call girl who charged Spitzer more than $4,000 a night.
Spitzer split from his wife of 26 years, Silda, who stood by his side when he resigned in disgrace - a moment in political history that inspired the TV show, "The Good Wife."
