Alleged Kalamazoo Shooter Was Uber Driver Who Picked Up Fares After Rampage: Report

Forty-five-year-old Jason Dalton of Kalamazoo County was arrested Sunday in connection with the rampage in Kalamazoo.

Cops say six people are dead and two injured, including a gravely injured 14-year-old girl, after a gunman tore through Kalamazoo, Michigan on a murderous rampage.

And cops have arrested an area Uber driver who reportedly picked up fares after the senseless slayings.

An Indianapolis man who identified himself to WOOD-TV as Derek was visiting the Kalamazoo area with his family and decided to take an Uber home from an evening out after hearing of the shootings in the area.

With his wife and mother-in-law in the car, Derek said he mentioned the shootings and then joked with his driver, "You’re not the shooter, are you?"

Looking back, Derek said the driver behaved sort of strangely when he replied, "No, I’m not, I’m just tired."

The group was dropped at an area hotel, where Derek said there were two police cruisers parked in the front, at 12:19 a.m.

The driver drove away. But, no less than 20 minutes later, police arrested Jason Dalton in connection to the six murders.

"It was the same guy," said Derek, who has since spoken with police.

The horror began Saturday at a Kalamazoo County apartment complex, where police say 45-year-old Dalton shot a woman multiple times around 6 p.m. That woman survived and was scheduled for surgery Sunday.

Fifteen miles away, a father and son were shot dead about four hours later as they shopped for a car at a dealership.

Minutes later, a hail of bullets in a nearby Cracker Barrell restaurant parking lot left four dead and a 14-year-old girl "gravely injured" in two separate cars, authorities told the AP.

Kalamazoo County Undersheriff Paul Matyas described the rampage as "our worst case scenario."

"These are random murders," Matyas said.

Dalton was arrested early Sunday morning after he was spotted in downtown Kalamazoo. Police say he gave himself up to them without incident.

"In this particular case, we're just thankful it ended the way it did - before he could really kill anybody else," Matyas said.

Police offered no potential motive for the horrific shootings. Dalton had no known criminal history.

Dalton was set to be arraigned Monday afternoon. Kalamazoo County Prosecutor Jeff Getting told INSIDE EDITION he'll likely face six counts of first-degree murder, attempted murder and weapons charges.
