11-Year-Old Boy Accidentally Shoots Himself Dead

Police in Gwinnett County, Georgia have revealed 11-year-old Alan Martinez accidentally shot himself dead in front of a 9-year-old boy.

A Georgia community is mourning the tragic loss of an 11-year-old boy who authorities said shot himself dead on Friday.

Police in Gwinnett County on Monday revealed the victim of the accident to be Alan Martinez, who they said was playing with the gun his home's garage when it discharged.

Martinez was reportedly in the garage with a 9-year-old, who witnessed the tragedy while Martinez's mother was inside the home.

There are no charges expected against the mother of the child, police said in a statement.

“This is a very sad and unfortunate reminder for gun owners to ensure that your guns are locked in a place that children cannot access,” Gwinnett police Cpl. Deon Washington said. "It is also a reminder of how important it is to teach children the dangers of playing with guns."

Martinez was a student at Summerour Middle School in Norcross.

A spokesperson from Gwinnett County Public Schools issued a statement regarding the case on Monday morning.

"The GCPS community is aware of the tragic death of a student who attends Summerour Middle School. We do have additional counselors at the school to help any students who need to talk about this situation," the statement read.
