The actress spoke to Diane Sawyer in an ABC 20/20 interview that will air on Friday.

Del Castillo, who plays a drug lord on a Mexican telenovela, said Guzmán was attracted to her character and admired her.

In 2012, Guzmán and the actress began communicating after he became aware of her show. The two kept in touch until he was busted in 2014 and sent to the maximum-security prison.

In September, Guzmán asked to bring Sean Penn to a meeting with her.

“My heart started pounding. I couldn’t believe that we were in there,” del Castillo told Sawyer. “I wanted to tell him that he could do good and I didn’t know if it was the last thing I would say.”

The meeting, which was documented in a Rolling Stone article in January, would be the last time she heard from El Chapo.

The actress also told Sawyer that she felt hurt and duped by Penn. She said she was angry because she thought Penn had wanted to help her with a movie.

“I’m angry at myself because I believe in people, and I didn’t know Sean Penn,” she said.

Guzmán, who had escaped from a maximum-security prison last July. was busted by Mexican authorities in January.

Following his arrest, del Castillo tweeted: “Thank you for your support over the past days. Not surprisingly, many have chosen to make up items they think will make good stories and that aren't truthful. I look forward to sharing my story with you. Kate del Castillo."
