The surveillance video, taken from a restaurant, shows what appears to be Smith's Mercedes SUV rear-ending a Hummer.

The Hummer, driven by suspect Cardell Hayes, pulled over. But the Mercedes took off and the Hummer gave chase.

Moments later, cops say the Hummer hit the Mercedes and angry words erupted which ended with Smith being shot dead.

Police said Tuesday that Smith had a loaded 9 mm handgun inside his Mercedes. Officers also found a loaded revolver inside Hayes' Hummer, but neither of those weapons was involved in the shooting, police said. A different handgun was used to shoot Smith, according to police.

Racquel Smith, known to her friends as Rockie, was shot twice in the leg but survived the incident that took the life of her husband, a beloved former New Orleans Saints star.

Smith, 34, was a key player when the Saints won the Super Bowl in 2010. Their victory helped restore pride to a city still recovering from Hurricane Katrina.

Hayes’ lawyer says his client was acting in self-defense because he thought Smith was going for a gun.
