Cops: Revered Radio Journalist and Breast Cancer Advocate Dead in Apparent Murder-Suicide

A radio journalist was shot and killed by her husband, who turned the gun on himself, police said.

A popular Michigan radio journalist was killed by her husband in a murder-suicide shooting Tuesday, police said.

Denise Bohn Stewart, 45, was found dead in an upstairs bedroom, authorities said. The body of her husband, Eric Stewart,  51, was discovered in the basement of the family's home.

"We've got three young juveniles, there's bullet holes in the walls. They said they heard bangs," an officer radioed from the St. Joseph home, reported WNDU-TV.

One of the couple's children, ages 10, nine and eight, called 911, police said.

The kids were not hurt.

WSJM, where Stewart worked as a radio reporter and  anchor, "is mourning the loss of one of our own," the station said in a statement.  Executives called her a dedicated journalist and "one of the best that I recall," said Gayle Olson, the board chair of Midwest Family Broadcasting.

Police said the weapon used to kill Stewart was downstairs with her husband's body.

She had also worked in Indiana as a television reporter, but joined the Michigan station in 2014. She was a breast cancer survivor who raised money and participated in races for cancer awareness.

Husband Eric was a maintenance supervisor at the Cook Nuclear Power Plant, authorities said.

Colleagues said her career spanned more than two decades. "Denise was a reporter in her heart," Olson said.
