The shooting is only the latest outburst of violence against police this month.
A San Diego police officer has died and another has been critically wounded after a traffic stop erupted in gunfire late Thursday night, according to multiple reports.
Authorities have confirmed that a suspect is in custody but urged local residents to stay indoors while the area was searched for others who may have been involved.

At a Friday press conference, authorities said the slain officer was 16-year police force veteran Jonathan "JD" DeGuzman, a married father of two. His partner, Wade Irwin, who was seriously injured, is expected to survive after undergoing emergency surgery.
The suspect's name has not been released.

“Despite heroic efforts by officers on the scene and heroic efforts by doctors to save his life, I’m heartbroken to report they were unable to save him, and he is deceased,” San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman said of the slain officer, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

According to reports, the two officers radioed for emergency assistance after a seemingly routine stop at 11 p.m. local time. Few other details were available as of Friday morning.
The shooting is the latest in a string of anti-cop violence that have left police officers dead and kept the country on edge.
Earlier this month, five officers were gunned down in Dallas, while three more were killed in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
In both cases, the shootings were linked to lingering discontent with police following two fatal shootings of black men by officers in as many days.
The shooting occurred as Hillary Clinton gave her historic acceptance speech for the Democratic presidential nomination, the latest burst of violence has already ricocheted into the national spotlight.
Republican presidential candidate, Donald Trump used the shooting to drive home his message of domestic security.

While there is so far no evidence linking the latest violence to Black Lives Matter, the issue is likely to be a flashpoint for the U.S. general election campaign and beyond.
