An Alabama inmate is on the loose after authorities say he never came back to jail following his release for a funeral.
Authorities in Morgan County say Wendell Dewayne Thompson was granted a release to attend the funeral of a family member where he was to act as a pallbearer.
The Morgan County Sheriff's Department says the 50-year-old did not come back to the county jail after being released to family Saturday.
Thompson was reportedly last seen at the Sharpley Funeral Home in Decatur.
A warrant has been issued for Thompson’s arrest, Morgan County sheriff’s Chief Deputy Mike Corley told the Decatur Daily.
"When he hadn’t returned by 6, the jail supervisor began to question the family about where he was," Corley said. "Then around 7, the family said he had [run] away during the funeral."
Authorities say Thompson was in county jail after being found in possession of crack cocaine.
Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to contact authorities.
