Lifeguards in Volusia County said two attacks occurred early Sunday just about a half hour apart before a third several hours later at New Smyrna Beach.

The first victim, a 43-year-old man, was badly bitten on the lower leg while surfing and was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, WKMG reports.

The next one was reported around 11 a.m. when another surfer was bitten on both hands. He was also taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The third attack took place about two hours later when a 16-year-old boy was bitten on his thigh. He was not taken to a hospital.

Locals, usually accustomed to the occasional brush with the shark in the area's warm waters, were shocked by Sunday's string of bites.

"Usually you get one today, one another week down the road," one local told WKMG. "But three in one day...that'll make you think a little bit."

The local said this time of years brings a lot of what he called bait fish in close to the beach as well as the bull sharks that follow.

"But I'm going out here to try to catch them today," he added, laughing.
