The children were surprised to see what was happening around them as they were off in dreamland.

A couple had a hard time convincing their children that their Elf on a Shelf was watching them as they slept, so they found a clever way to make them believe.
They set up a night vision camera in the kids' bedroom and captured the "elf" dancing around.
They then showed the video to their children, Sky and Fabian, who were astonished by what they saw.
"He was dancing all around us," Fabian told Inside Edition.

Their dad, Bobby, told his kids during the interview: “You better be good, 'cause you know he's watching.”
“You never know” when the elf is around, he said.
