They later died at the hospital.

Twin toddlers were killed in a California house fire on Tuesday night that may have been sparked by the family’s Christmas tree, according to reports.

The 2-year-olds, who have not yet been identified, were rescued from the Watts home, along with their father, by firefighters, but later died of their injuries in the hospital, reports said.

Neighbors told KTLA that the father of the boys, 35-year-old Benjamin Forston, ran back into the house to rescue the children but became trapped himself. He is in critical condition.

The boys’ pregnant mother and 4-year-old sister were also reportedly in the house when the fire broke out but were able to get out unharmed.

KTLA also reported that neighbors tried to run in and rescue the children before the fire department arrived, but were unable.

“It was just too much heat and the smoke was just really unbearable,” neighbor Ronny D told the paper.

"I’m calling for the kids, ‘where are you, where are you?’ And I wasn’t getting any response,” he said.
