Mother Arrested, Abducted Sisters Located in 1985 Child Snatching Case

Kelly Yates and Kimberly Yates were taken by their non-custodial mother 30 years ago and found living under assumed names.

A Rhode Island double child abduction case dating back to 1985 has apparently been solved after a mother was arrested and her two adult daughters were informed of the shocking allegations against her.

Elaine Yates was located in Houston, Texas, Monday and placed under arrest more than 30 years after investigators say she abducted her young daughters, of which she did not have custody.

Officials revealed Tuesday that Kelly Yates, who was 10 months old at the time, and Kimberly Yates, who was 3 and-a-half, were found living under assumed names in Houston.

While their aliases were not revealed, police said the sisters — now aged 32 and 35 — were surprised at news of the mother's arrest.

According to Rhode Island State Police, Kelly and Kimberly were allegedly abducted from Warwick by Yates, against whom a felony warrant for child snatching was issued in November 1988.

Fast forward to December 2016, when members of the Rhode Island State Police say they received information regarding the possible whereabouts of Yates and her daughters.

With the assistance of the Texas Department of Public Safety, Elaine Yates was discovered residing in the City of Houston, Texas under the alias name of Leina L. Waldberg.

Police say Yates confirmed her true identity when she was arrested. She has been charged with child snatching.

Yates was arraigned in Houston and waived extradition. She is currently being transported back to Rhode Island for a formal arraignment on Wednesday.
