As Trump’s third wife got out of the motorcade, she wore a powder blue Ralph Lauren dress that echoed Jackie Kennedy’s outfit from her husband’s 1961 inauguration.

Kennedy was a style icon, and Melania Trump, a former model known for her fashion picks, will most likely follow suit.

Mrs. Trump, who also wore matching powder blue leather gloves and had her hair in an updo, smiled as she greeted the outgoing first family. She also received thunderous applause when she walked down the steps of the Capitol building during her husband’s inauguration ceremony.

The Slovenian-born first lady’s dress came from the Ralph Lauren Collection, which vice president of fashion and PR communications for the label, Florinka Pesenti, told CNN is the brand's most expensive label.

Michelle Obama wore a red Narciso Rodriguez dress on her final day as first lady.

Ralph Lauren designed many of former first lady Hillary Clinton’s outfits while her husband was in office from 1993 to 2000.

Lauren released a statement saying: “it’s important to us to uphold and celebrate the tradition of creating iconic American style for this moment"

Ralph Lauren is a temple of Americana. The first lady's spokesperson says Melania Trump chose a designer who has transformed American fashion. The outfit she wore for the ceremony is made of cashmere and was custom designed for the new first lady.

Once a designer gets the seal of approval from a first lady, it can tremendously boost their profile.

When Michelle Obama wore Jason Wu to the 2009 Inauguration Ball, the then-unknown young designer became a household name almost immediately. Mrs. Obama’s inauguration gown now resides in the Smithsonian. Wu also designed the dress Mrs. Obama wore during her husband’s farewell address to the nation earlier this month.

After Melania Trump wore a $2,190 Roksanda “Margot” dress at the Republican National Convention in July, the outfit was instantly sold out online.
