Strangers Raise $200,000 For 3 Children Whose Parents Died After Photo Showed Them Holding Hands

The terminally ill parents died within the same week.

After both of their parents died within days of each other, three children have received more than $200,000 in donations from kind-hearted strangers.

Mike and Julie Bennet suffered from terminal cancer. Mike, 57, died last Monday. Julie, 50, died Saturday.

Money poured into a JustGiving page after the British family posted a photo of the dying couple holding hands in hospice care.

The couple’s children — Oliver, 13, Hannah, 18, and Luke 21 — said they were “overwhelmed” by the response.

The fundraising site was established by a family friend so the three could "continue to live at home and sustain their activities and studies."

Mike Bennet had been diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2013 and had been cared for by his wife and children. Julie was diagnosed last year with kidney and liver cancer, the family said.

More than 7,000 people donated to the site.

One woman noted that Julie was a dedicated mother. "Her face lit up when talking about her children. She never complained... and was a perfect example of a ‘glass half-full’ attitude."

Family friend Heather Heaton Gallagher called the couple extremely supportive parents.

“Facing a double terminal cancer diagnosis is beyond belief, and as a community we are working hard to support the family so that they can stay together and ensure that they can continue their education as planned,” the Guardian reported.

Another friend, Sue Wright, said she told a dying Judy that her children would be looked after.

"She opened her eyes and smiled," Wright said.
