'Cosmo' Under Fire for Weight Loss Headline About Woman With Cancer

"Cancer is not a diet plan," one irate Twitter user said. "Delete this."

Cosmopolitan magazine is taking a beating online for trumpeting a story about a woman who "lost 44 pounds without any exercise."

The woman had battled cancer.

After criticism erupted online over the Twitter headline, Cosmo changed it to read, "A serious health scare helped me love my body more than ever."

But the blistering feedback is still out there.

"As a cancer doctor, I’m horrified," physician Dr. Allison Betof tweeted. “How incredibly disrespectful and insensitive. You owe a lot of patients an apology."

“Chemo for invasive breast cancer almost killed me but I could have lost 130lbs!” another woman wrote.

The story profiled Australian fitness Instagrammer Simone Harbinson, who underwent several surgeries for appendix cancer. The 31-year-old said she turned to food for comfort after her diagnosis.

She was able to shed 44 pounds by changing her diet, she said. She was unable to exercise because she was recuperating from cancer treatments and surgery.

On Wednesday morning, former first daughter and Today show personality Jenna Bush Hager said the original tweet from Cosmo illustrated "a culture where you’re creating headlines just for clicks."

The publication has not commented on the controversy.
